JOB TITLE:                IS Fitter

GRADE:                      PE11

 Purpose of the role:

 The IS (Individual Section) machine Fitter is responsible for maintaining, modifying, repairing, installing, and optimising equipment with a view to ensuring equipment availability and reliability, and ultimately enabling operational continuity while achieving Zero Harm.

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain equipment in good operating condition to optimise equipment availability, reliability, and production output.
  • Implement preventative maintenance plans, inspection schedules & works orders.
  • Job changes, set up the machine for a particular production run, which will include installing the correct moulds for the specific product and making necessary machine adjustments (for example to feed rate, timing, gob size etc).
  • Ensuring that all sections are producing containers to the correct specification and standard by carrying out action during production such as: swabbing (application of a release agent, known as mould dope), adjustments to timing, replacing mould sets and quality checks.
  • Maintenance / repair – Safe systems of work shall be in place for all the following activities; Preventative maintenance of IS Machines components and equipment associated with production of container glass; Essential maintenance of IS Machines during job changes; Planned and unplanned replacement/repairs of IS Machine components and equipment; Workshop repairs and preparation of essential IS Machine components and Immediate response to breakdowns to minimise downtime.
  • Diagnose and interpret problems (fault finding)
  • Repair breakdowns: ensuring that all required information is recorded in the system, along with duration of breakdowns and delays in resolution.
  • Monitor spares consumption and provide feedback as necessary to ensure ongoing spares availability.
  • Use assets and resources optimally to eliminate or minimise waste as necessary.
  • Comply with approved engineering standards and routines (5S, problem solving, ATO, etc.)
  • Ensure that equipment is stored and cleaned in line with requirements.
  • Identify broken and defective tools, parts, and components for reporting to management.
  • Isolate defective tools, parts and components, and report to management.
  • Implement Short Interval Controls (SIC) and visual management.
  • Adhere with the company’s escalation procedure.
  • Utilise Computerised Monitoring Maintenance System (CMMS)
  • Monitor contractor work to ensure quality in line with quality requirements.
  • Conduct periodic stock count of spares parts for all machines, and complete required documentation for tracking purposes.
  • Comply with modification control procedures and management of change processes (MOC_
  • Give input to identified projects as necessary.
  • Implement departmental projects.
  • Partake in standby duties and responsibilities.
  • Respond to after hour calls as and when required

Qualifications:

  • An artisan qualification for a Fitting and Turning and or Millwright trade. (Trade Test Certification)
  • Minimum of N4 mechanical qualification

Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Fitter and Turner or Millwright in a glass packaging manufacturing environment or similar industry.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience operating specialized machinery and tools for assembly and repair.
  • Sound knowledge of IS machines
  • Hydraulic and Pneumatic experience

  • The ability to use the equipment and safety devices supplied, in accordance with instructions.
  • Technical Proficiency and a solid understanding of mechanical systems and the ability to read and interpret technical information are crucial.
  • Problem-Solving, be adept at diagnosing issues and developing effective solutions to mechanical problems.
  • Attention to Detail and precision is vital in ensuring that all components fit together correctly, and function as intended. Assembling parts and systems within precise specifications.
