Job Title: Draughtsman

Grade: PE10

Purpose of Job:

Responsible for developing precise technical drawings and 3D models for glass bottle designs used in packaging applications. The role involves translating product concepts into detailed manufacturing drawings and mould-ready formats, ensuring design feasibility, aesthetics, and compliance with industry standards. Additionally, the draughtsman will be required to prepare detailed technical drawings and schematics for machinery, plant layouts and mechanical systems used on site.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create 2D technical drawings and 3D CAD models for custom and standard glass bottles.
  • Interpret customer requirements, product briefs, and brand specifications into manufacturable bottle designs.
  • Prepare detailed drawings for mould fabrication and coordinate with mould makers.
  • Revise and update drawings as needed based on feedback from production, QA, or clients.
  • Maintain accurate records and manage version control for all design files and technical documents.
  • Support new product development (NPD) projects and contribute to innovation in glass packaging.
  • Create and revise detailed drawings for mechanical components, assemblies, and plant layouts using CAD software.
  • Develop and maintain a library of technical drawings and engineering documents.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers to ensure drawings meet design specifications and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Update drawings based on site modifications, repairs, or improvements.
  • Assist in preparing bills of materials (BOM), material specifications, and part lists.
  • Conduct field measurements and site visits to gather data for drawing updates or new designs.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant safety and industry standards.
  • Support procurement and maintenance teams by providing technical drawing inputs for spares and fabrication.

Safety, Health, Environmental, Quality and Risk Management

  • Adhere to Health and Safety measures e.g., wearing safety and protective equipment and SHEQ system requirements.
  • Comply with all applicable policies, procedures, and guidelines as well as all recommended safety procedures, standards, and practices to ensure efficient and uninterrupted plant operations.
  • Identify, correct and/or report non-compliance.
  • Identify unsafe practices and close out as per site requirements.
  • Ensure reporting, investigation, documentation and action of incidents as per the plant standards.
  • Adhere to permit to work and lockout procedure.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Drafting, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2–5 years of experience in a similar drafting role, preferably in a manufacturing or glass production environment.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Proficient in 2D and 3D CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, manufacturing processes, and plant machinery.
  • Knowledge of glass manufacturing equipment is a significant advantage.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing tolerances, material behaviours (thermal expansion, stress points), and defect prevention
  • Familiarity with FEA tools for stress analysis (advantageous but not mandatory)
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
