Job Title: Batch and Furnace Process Technician

Grade: PE10

Purpose of Job:

Responsible for monitoring, controlling and analysing the process of glass raw materials batch production and raw materials batch melting in the furnace to produce quality molten glass with zero defects

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor, control and analyse the process of glass raw materials batch production using SCADA
  • Monitor, control and analyse the process of glass raw materials batch melting inside the furnace using SCADA
  • Monitor the performance of Batch plant and furnace equipment’s and process conditions and report when major maintenance or repairs are necessary
  • Read and monitor flow meters, level probes, thermocouples, pressure gauges and take routine readings on process variables and adjust when required
  • Perform inspection and cleaning of batch plant and furnace equipment’s and report when major maintenance or repairs are necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and clear process logs.
  • Quickly diagnose and troubleshoot routine or minor problems
  • Determine glass colour using spectrophotometer.
  • Determine seeds, blisters and stone levels in all production lines.

Safety, Health, Environmental, Quality and Risk Management

  • Adhere to Health and Safety measures e.g., wearing safety and protective equipment and SHEQ system requirements.
  • Comply with all applicable policies, procedures, and guidelines as well as all recommended safety procedures, standards, and practices to ensure efficient and uninterrupted plant operations.
  • Identify, correct and/or report non-compliance.
  • Identify unsafe practices and close out as per site requirements.
  • Ensure reporting, investigation, documentation and action of incidents as per the plant standards.
  • Adhere to permit to work and lockout procedure.

Qualifications:

  • Dip / degree in Chemical Engineering

Skills and Competencies:

  • 3 years Chemical engineering knowledge in glass manufacturing environment.
  • Process Control knowledge.
  • Knowledge and understanding of SCADA.
  • Technical Engineering background is desirable
  • Analytical and systematics problem solving skills
  • Analysing and interpreting operational data to solve process issues.
  • Natural curiosity and willingness to learn.
  • Strong interpersonal & communication skills – ability to work effectively with a wide range of diverse constituencies.
  • Capable to prioritise and follow upon multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Be willing to work in a noisy & dusty environment
  • Able to withstand high temperatures of more than 250 C
  • Able to work at heights and confined spaces
  • Be willing to overtime and be available on call out
